Oughterard, Lough Corrib and nearby Connemara offer some of the most stunning scenery you would encounter anywhere. What better way to experience it than by enjoying some of the many outdoor activities on offer.
Refer to our walking section for some scenic routes. The award winning walks, Heritage Walk and the Leam Walk, have detailed guides which are downloadable. The Heritage Walk is ideal to find your way around Oughterard Village and the Leam Walk takes you into the countryside of Connemara.
Oughterard may be best known for its fishing in Lough Corrib. See our fishing section where we have regular contributions by the Oughterard Anglers and Boatmen's Association during the fishing season.
Boating is of course popular, as well, with Lough Corrib on the doorstep. With 365 islands to explore, Inchagoill being the most historic, there is plenty to see. Corrib Cruises offers a variety of tours of the lake or you may hire a local boatman to take you around.
The West of Ireland has always been a popular destination for cycling enthusiasts and now with the opening of the Derroura Mountain Bike Trail it has become even more attractive to cyclists. The off-road trail holds fantastic views of the surrounding Connemara Mountains. Check out our YouTube videos of the trail to get a real feel for it! See below for a sample of the video or check out the page about Derroura.
